Beloit Sky Carp News Release
APPLETON, WI - Austin House fired five innings and only allowed one run to help the Beloit Snappers trip the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, 5-3, in Midwest League action at Fox Cities Stadium on Wednesday night.
With a victory that puts them at 33-25, Beloit leapfrogged Quad Cities to take back the lead in the Western Division wild card race. Wisconsin now has a record of 24-30.
Brett Vertigan got the Snappers going right from the start with a lead-off single. Two walks by starter Tyler Wagner (5-4) quickly followed and a wild pitch allowed Vertigan to scamper home with the game's first run. An RBI groundout by Matt Olson later in the frame pushed the lead to 2-0. More wildness by the Timber Rattlers' pitching staff worked to Beloit's advantage in the fourth, as both Bruce Maxwell and Olson scored on wild pitches, giving House a four run advantage to work with.
During the entirety of his night, House (1-4) continually denied Wisconsin chances to score. He stranded men in scoring position in four of his five innings. He allowed seven hits and walked two, but the only run he gave up came on a Victor Roache (2-5, 2 RBI) single in the bottom of the fifth. He also racked up seven strikeouts.
In the sixth inning, the Timber Rattles strung together three consecutive two-out hits, the final one an RBI single by Orlando Arcia, to creep to within 4-2.
Beloit entered the ninth still holding that two run edge and looking for insurance. Daniel Robertson (1-3, HR, RBI, 2 runs) provided it with his fourth homer of the season, a solo shot to left. Manager Ryan Christenson then called on All-Star closer Ryan Dull, who, despite allowing a run, was able to close it out for his tenth save.
On Thursday night, Beloit will send out another one of their newly minted Midwest League All-Stars, RHP Raul Alcantara (6-1, 2.94 ERA), to take on RHP Damien Magnifico (5-0, 3.89 ERA). The first pitch time is 7:05pm.
