Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kernels fell to the Quad Cities River Bandits, 9-5, on Thursday night.
The River Bandits entered the scorebook in the top of the 1st. Shortstop Carlos Correa hit a solo home run to give his team an early 1-0 advantage.
Quad Cities posted a big offensive inning in the 2nd as the first three batters reached base. Jordan Scott recorded the game's first RBI when he walked with the bases loaded. Ruben Sosa followed that up with a fielder's choice RBI, and then Correa rifled a RBI single off the left field wall, but was thrown out at second.
Dalton Hicks powered a home run to trim the Kernels deficit in the bottom of the 2nd. The opposite field shot was Hicks' 8th of the season and it extended his hit streak to 11 games.
The first four River Bandits hitters reached based in the 4th as they pushed across 4 in the frame to open up the line score and take a 9-1 lead. The inning was highlighted by, with the bases loaded, Correa hitting a bases clearing double down the left field line. Correa - the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft - finished the contest 3-for-4 with 5 RBI. He reached all five times.
The Kernels pushed across two runs in the 7th with Candido Pimentel and Jhonatan Arias scoring. Byron Buxton hit a sacrifice fly and J.D. Williams doubled home Arias a couple pitches later. Williams finished 3-for-4.
Hicks hit his second homer of the night to lead off the 8th, his 9th long ball and 50th RBI of the season. Hicks now has two multi-HR performances in his last 5 games.
Kernels starter Jose Berrios (4-3) threw 3.1 innings, allowing 9 runs (6 earned) on 5 hits while walking 4 and striking out 6. Relievers Josue Montanez and Tyler Jones threw a combined 5.2 scoreless innings.
For the River Bandits, starter Vincent Velasquez finished with 4.2 innings to his name, allowing just the homer to Hicks and 5 total hits. Jamaine Cotton replaced Velasquez, and Cotton (1-2) allowed 3 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits in 3.1 innings pitched.
