Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - The Fort Wayne TinCaps (35-23) took advantage of four Lansing Lugnuts (25-31) errors, hanging on to win 5-3 at Cooley Law School Stadium on Thursday night.
The loss drops the Lugnuts to 0-8 against the TinCaps this season. Contributing to the defeat, Lansing has now committed four errors in back-to-back games.
The TinCaps plated five runs, all against Lugnuts starter Alonzo Gonzalez, but only two of them were earned.
A sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout put Fort Wayne up 2-0 after the top of the first inning.
The 'Caps added a run in the fourth as Luis Tejada scored on an error on Lansing first baseman Kevin Patterson.
Two more runs came across in the fifth inning after Maxx Tissenbaum scored on a fielder's choice and then Chris Burke scored Tejada with an RBI single.
Gonzalez (Loss, 2-4) lasted five innings but pitched well in the tough-luck loss. He allowed just two earned runs on eight hits, striking out two and walking one. Griffin Murphy and Ian Kadish each tossed two scoreless innings of relief.
Lansing hung tough, scoring a run in the second on an RBI groundout from Chris Hawkins and a pair in the eighth inning on back-to-back run scoring doubles by Patterson and Gustavo Pierre.
For the second straight night, they brought the game-tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but Luis Tejada converted a four-out save, his fourth of the season.
In the loss, Pierre registered his 19th multi-hit game of the season and Dalton Pompey finished 2-for-4, stealing his 19th bag of the year in 20 attempts.
Bryan Rodriguez (Win, 1-0) earned his first win of the season in a five-inning start for Fort Wayne. Rodriguez gave up one run on five hits, walking one without a strikeout. He gave way to Matthew Shepherd and Tejada, who sealed the TinCaps' third straight victory.
The series finale is set for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch on Friday night, where the Lugnuts will host a Flat Screen Friday presented by Auto-Owners Insurance. Lansing will send right-hander Taylor Cole (3-3, 3.88) to the mound to take on Fort Wayne right-hander Walker Weickel (0-3, 5.63).
