Norfolk Tides News Release
J.R. House broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run single in the 6th inning, lifting the Tides to a 5-4 win over the Charlotte Knights Monday afternoon.
Trailing 3-2 entering the sixth, Norfolk tallied three runs on four hits, giving the Tides their second straight win to close out an eight-game road trip. With one out in the sixth, Luis Montanez ignited the rally with a single to left and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Charlotte starter Heath Phillips (3-3). Eider Torres followed with a single that advanced Montanez to third, knocking Phillips out of the game in favor of reliever Jason Childers.
Cesar Crespo greeted Childers with an RBI single to tie the score at 3-3, and Brandon Fahey walked to load the bases, setting the stage for House. House lined a 2-2 pitch through the left side, plating Torres and Crespo to put the Tides up 5-3.
Charlotte tallied a single run off of Sean Tracey in the 8th inning to pull within 5-4, but Paul Shuey got Casey Rogowski to pop out with runners on first and second to escape the jam. Cory Doyne then pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 8th save of the year.
Norfolk had taken an early lead in the first inning, as Terry Tiffee drove home two with a bases loaded double. Tiffee also doubled later in the game, and has now hit safely in 10 straight games for the second time this season.
Tides' starter Garrett Olson (1-4) retired the first nine batters he faced, but ran into trouble in the 4th inning. Jerry Owens started the inning with a single, and Pedro Lopez followed with a double to move Owens to third. Toby Hall followed with a home run into left field, giving the Knights a 3-2 lead.
Olson allowed five hits in the fourth inning, but avoided further damage en route to picking up his first win of the year. The 23-year-old southpaw went seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out two.
The Tides return to Harbor Park on Tuesday night for a doubleheader against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees. First pitch from Harbor Park is set for 6:15 p.m.
