Clippers are red hot

May 14, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Columbus Clippers News Release

The Columbus Clippers moved into second place yesterday as they have battled back to the .500 mark. The Clippers have been red hot after a cold April start (2-10) both on the field and with the weather. The Hometown heroes are 8-3 since May 3rd.

The pitching has been strong all season. Tim Redding leads the league with five wins. Chris Booker is leading the circuit with 12 saves. When the Nationals called up Winston Abreu after he struck out 21 hitters in nine innings in relief, he was replaced in the bullpen by Anastacio Martinez. Anastacio picked up where Winston left off. He has not been scored on since coming to Columbus.

Darnell McDonald, last week's I.L. Player of the Week has stayed hot. Over the past ten games, Darnell is hitting .372 with 14 RBIs. He currently has a 14 game hitting streak. But McDonald is not caring the load on his shoulders alone. Brandon Watson (.421, with a 13 game hitting streak), D'Angelo Jimenez (.406), Abraham Nunez (.333) and Bernie Castro (.333) are wearing out pitchers.

With the Clippers returning home tomorrow, there are a few good story lines...

Skipper John Stearns has ignited the club despite eight players (pitchers Chris Michalak, Emiliano Fruto, Jason Simontacchi, Joel Hanrahan, Arnie Munoz, catcher Juan Brito, first baseman Larry Broadway and outfielder George Lombard) at times on the DL and 36 player transactions, so far this spring. Clippers outfielder Kory Casto, third baseman Tony Batisita and pitchers Jason Simontacchi, Winston Abreu and Jerome Williams are currently with Washington. John is a good interview. He doesn't hold anything back. John has never met a mike he doesn't like.

McDonald is a part of a great athletic family. His brother Donzell played for the Clippers. His Dad, Donzell Sr., played professional baseball in the Pirates organization. His uncle Ben played in the NBA with Golden State and his uncle James played in the NFL with the Rams. Darnell was a great high school tailback in Colorado (over 6,000 yards rushing) and turned down a football and baseball scholarship to Texas, to play professional baseball.

Big Chris Booker has more saves than 12 teams in the International League! But the real hero in his family is his sister Kewanna, who is about to be deployed with her second tour of duty in Iraq with the Army's 50th Signal Battalion.

D'Angelo Jimenez is in top form. D'Angelo was the 1999 Clipper of the Year. That winter he was in a near fatal car accident. He fractured the second cervical vertebrae when his car collided with a bus. Amazingly, he returned to play major league baseball for the past seven seasons.

The Clippers start a ten game homestand tomorrow with a lot of great promotions:
