Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, Ky. - Ryne Stanek was masterful in just his fourth professional start, and the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) offense erupted for 15 runs to defeat the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers), 15-0. Stanek just one base runner in six innings to record his first professional victory.
Stanek (1-2) conceded a two-out double to Raph Rhymes in the first inning, but retired all 16 batters he faced after. Stanek did not issue a free pass, and he struck out four batters while lowering his earned run average to 2.97.
The Bowling Green offense gave Stanek an early lead with two runs in the first. With Darryl George aboard at first base, Armando Araiza doubled him home. Johnny Field then slashed a single to plate Araiza. The offensive continued as Yoel Araujo helped lead a charge for three runs in the third. Oscar Hernandez singled with one out, then scored when Ty Young doubled to left field. Araujo then clubbed a home run to left-center field to extend the Hot Rods lead to 5-0.
Five more runs came across in the seventh as the Bowling Green offense refused to be silenced. With one out, Araiza was hit by a pitch. Field followed with a triple to right-center field. Field came across to score when Hernandez sliced a single. Araujo posted the loudest swing of the inning, as he slammed his second home run of the game over the left field bullpen. A run-scoring double by Juniel Querecuto finished off the seventh, as the Hot Rods led 10-0.
The offensive charge continued with five more runs in the eighth. Ariel Soriano led off with a single to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Following a walk to Field, Young tripled into the right-center field gap, scoring both Soriano and Field. Araujo was then hit by a pitch to place runners on the corners, and Alexander Simon capped the day off with a home run over the right field fence, his first since Aug. 17, 2012. The surge gave the game its final margin of 15-0.
Fifteen runs is the highest output of the season for the Hot Rods, and they also matched a season-high for hits with 15. The eight extra-base hits is a new best total for the campaign. Aaron Griffin and Andrew Hanse followed Stanek's six innings with two and one shutout frames respectively.
The Hot Rods will go for the series victory Tuesday night at Bowling Green Ballpark. It will be game six of a nine-game homestand, and gates will open at 6 p.m. Fans should arrive early on a T-Shirt Tuesday presented by All About You Urgent Clinic, and first pitch will be hurled at 7:05 p.m. German Marquez takes the mound, and he'll be opposed by former Vanderbilt star, Kevin Ziomek.
