Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
BELOIT, Wis. - The Kernels lost 6-5 at Pohlman Field to the Beloit Snappers on Memorial Day, despite hitting three home runs on the afternoon. All of the Kernels offense came from the three long-balls, which were the most in a single game for the Kernels on the season. The Kernels hit back to back home runs for the first time in a game this season when Chad Christensen and Mitch Garver both went deep in the eighth inning. Bryan Haar hit his team-high eighth home run, sending one over the wall for the second consecutive game.
However, it was a four-run third inning for Beloit that proved to be the difference. The Snappers took a 4-0 lead in the third inning when Luis Baez hit a RBI sacrifice fly and B.J. Boyd drilled a three-run home run to right-center. It was Boyd's fourth home run of the season.
Kohl Stewart (1-2) took the loss for the Kernels, allowing four runs on five hits over 2 1/3 innings. He walked four and struck out three.
Haar's home run came in the fourth inning and cut the deficit to 4-2. His eighth of the season also scored Mitch Garver, who recorded the team's first hit - a single to right - one batter earlier.
The Snappers responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 6-2 lead with a RBI double by Tyler Marincov and a RBI single by B.A. Vollmuth. The runs were allowed by Felix Jorge, who went 2 2/3 innings in relief. He allowed the two runs on three total hits while striking out two and walking one.
The Kernels scored three times in the eighth inning, cutting Beloit's lead to 6-5. Ryan Walker led off the frame with a single before coming home on Christensen's two-run, line drive shot that got over the wall in left. It was Christensen's third home run of the season and cut the deficit to two runs. Next batter, Mitch Garver then launched a home run over the wall in left-center for his sixth of the season, but that was the final run the Kernels tallied on the day.
Chris Mazza went two scoreless and hitless innings for the Kernels in his season-debut. He struck out three and walked one. Alex Muren added a scoreless innings as he allowed one hit.
Kyle Finnegan (5-1) went seven innings for the Beloit-victory. He allowed two runs on four hits while striking out two and walking one. Sam Bragg allowed three runs in 1/3 inning. Andres Avila recorded his sixth save by going 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
