Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - Jordan Hankins saw just one pitch on Monday and it ended up being the one pitch that decided the ballgame as the Cougars' walked-off against the Peoria Chiefs 5-4 in 11 innings at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. The Cougars (34-17) guaranteed a series victory over the Chiefs (27-23) and will go for the sweep on Tuesday to finish up a six-game home stand.
Tied 3-3 both teams failed to score in the tenth inning despite having base runners. In the 11th, Gerwuins Velazco continued his hot day with a leadoff double and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Richy Pedroza for a 4-3 Chiefs' lead.
The Cougars retaliated in similar fashion in the bottom half of the inning, as Cael Brockmeyer double to begin the Cougars' offense. Two batters later, David Bote hit a fly ball to left field, deep enough for Brockmeyer to score tying the game 4-4.
Then Jordan Hankins was due up.
Hankins came into the ballgame in the tenth inning at third base. He was the third Cougar to bat in the number nine spot in the order as Will Remillard was a pinch hitter for Shawon Dunston Jr. in the ninth, but Remillard never saw the field. On the first pitch from Kevin Herget, Hankins swung and belted it over the right-center field wall for the Cougars' fourth walk-off victory this season.
The game needed to be decided in extras because of the Cougars' rally in the ninth when they were down by two runs. With runners at the corners, Jacob Rogers singled home Ben Carhart to cut the Chiefs' lead 3-2. Daniel Lockhart later singled to load the bases. Zach Loraine, who started the inning, hit Bote with a pitch to tie the ballgame. The Cougars couldn't walk-off in the ninth as Steven Sabatino retired Remillard and Jake Hannemann to end the inning.
The Cougars took the first lead of the game in the second inning. Rogers connected on his fourth home run of the year opening to scoring 1-0. Rogers' solo blast made it the second consecutive game that the Cougars' took the lead on a homerun.
Velazco tied up the game in the fourth with a solo shot of his own. The Chiefs scored two more runs in the seventh for their first lead of the series at 3-1.
Jose Arias (1-1) picked up the win despite giving up go ahead run in the 11 th. Herget (3-2) suffered the loss.
The Cougars can sweep the Chiefs on Tuesday. Duane Underwood (1-1, 2.43) will take the mound for the Cougars against Peoria's Blake McKnight(1-4, 6.68). First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. For tickets call 630-232-8811 or visit kccougars.com.
