Great Lakes Loons News Release
EASTLAKE, OH - The Great Lakes Loons pounded out 16 hits with at least one coming from eight of the nine position players in the lineup en route to a 9-6 win over the Lake County Captains in the first game of a three-game set east of Cleveland.
Brandon Trinkwon and Jacob Scavuzzo led the hit parade with three each, including one double each. Jesmuel Valentin, Josmar Cordero, Spencer Navin and Malcolm Holland notched two hits each.
With the game tied at 5-5, the Loons exploded for four unearned runs in the seventh. Cordero drove in the go-ahead run on a single to center scoring Joey Curletta, who reached base with one out when first baseman Grant Fink was ruled to have come off first base on a throw from third. Navin, Holland and Valentin tacked on RBI singles in the frame.
Lake County had tied the score in the previous half inning on a two-run home run by Eric Haase, his ninth of the year.
Seven of the nine Loons runs were charged to lefty reliever Matt Whitehouse (1-1), although just three of the runs were earned.
Victor Araujo (1-0) earned a win with his first decision of the season with two hitless, scoreless innings. Mark Pope retired all three batters he faced in the ninth for his third save.
The Loons (24-26) and Captains (17-33) meet for a Memorial Day matinee in the middle game of a three-game series at 1pm. Right-hander Victor Arano (2-2, 5.74) starts for the Loons against Lake County righty Robbie Aviles (1-1, 1.65). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM and ESPN1009.com.
The Loons return to Dow Diamond Saturday, May 31 at 7:05pm for Star Wars Night, featuring a post-game Fireworks Loontacular, powered by Dow Corning. Tickets are available at Loons.com or by calling 989-837-BALL.
The Great Lakes Loons are an eighth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com, or call 989-837-BALL.
