Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Bowling Green, KY - The Hot Rods received a solid pitching effort from starter Braulio Lara and relievers Austin Hubbard and Chris Rearick, but fell short to first place Lansing by a 3-2 final. Down to their last out, Bowling Green strung together three straight hits to slice the lead to one run. A Phil Wunderlich strikeout ended the comeback effort, as the Hot Rods have now split the first two games of a four-game set with the Lugnuts. Despite the loss, Bowling Green remains tied for second place in the Eastern Division thanks to rainouts for both Dayton and Great Lakes.

Lara suffered his fifth straight loss despite allowing only four hits over five and two-thirds solid innings. Centerfielder Cody Rogers continued a torrid pace at the plate with another two extra-base hits and his league-leading 39th and 40th runs scored. Steve Tinoco, hitting second in the Hot Rods order, notched three hits and an RBI in the losing effort.

The Lugnuts got on the board immediately in the 1st inning when Markus Brisker tripled to start the game and Carlos Perez drove him home with a sacrifice fly. Lara would settle in from that point on, putting up zeroes on the board for the next three frames.

Catcher Carlos Perez gave the Lugnuts an insurance run with a two-out single in the 5th, scoring Bryson Namba for a 2-0 Lansing lead. The Hot Rods would fight back for a run of their own in the 5th, with Rogers crossing the plate on a wild pitch by reliever Misaul Diaz. With the score 2-1, Diaz righted the ship and held the Hot Rods off the scoreboard for two more innings. Bowling Green threatened with a two-out rally in the 7th, putting two on for Wunderlich, but the first baseman struck out swinging to end the rally.

Danny Barnes and closer Steve Turnbull shut the door for the Lugnuts. Turnbull picked up two quick outs before Rogers tripled to the gap in left-center. A Steve Tinoco single cut the lead to 3-2, with Tinoco picking up his 15th RBI of the season. Turnbull escaped the 9th inning jam to earn his 12th save, moving him into sole possession of first place in the Midwest League.
