Peoria Chiefs News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Peoria Chiefs couldn't hold early leads of 4-0 and 5-2 and lost to the Cedar Rapids Kernels 6-5 on a walk-off home run by Ricky Alvarez Saturday night. The two-out solo homer sends the Chiefs to 0-2 on the roadtrip and 27-22 overall.

After being shutout in the Friday night opener, the Chiefs wasted no time breaking through on Saturday evening. Matt Szczur led off the game with a single to left, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and onto third on a wild pitch. Greg Rohan put the Chiefs on top 1-0 with a single through a drawn-in infield before Brian Diemer escaped the inning.

The Chiefs padded their lead in the third inning against Diemer. Szczur led off with a single and stole second before Elliot Soto singled to put runners on the corners. Rohan put the Chiefs up 2-0 with a single to left and Richard Jones made it 3-0 with a basehit to right. The lead was extended to 4-0 as Rohan scored on a groundout by Ryan Cuneo.

Cedar Rapids got on the board in the bottom of the third thanks to a Chiefs misplay. With one down, Rolando Gomez reached on an infield single and David Harris drew a walk. After a strikeout, Jeremy Cruz reached on a grounder that went under the glove of Rohan at third but was somehow ruled a hit. The next batter, Marcus Nidiffer, singled home two before Beeler struck out Jerod Yakubik to end the frame with the Chiefs up 4-2.

With two outs in the top of the sixth, Arismendy Alcantara reached on a single to center and scored on a double by Szczur for a 5-2 Chiefs lead. However, the Kernels came back swinging against Chiefs' reliever Yohan Gonzalez in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Yakubik doubled to right and scored on a single by Wes Hatton. Daniel Eichelberger connected on his first homer of the season out of the nine slot in the tie the game at five.

After the Chiefs went in order in the seventh, eighth and ninth, Casey Harman got the first two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Alvarez ended the game with a monster home run completely out of the stadium to left field for the 6-5 Kernels win.

Beeler allowed two runs on six hits over four innings while walking one and striking out five. Gonzalez allowed three runs on three hits over two innings while walking one. Larry Suarez threw two scoreless innings and struck out three while allowing three hits in his 2011 debut. Harman (0-1) allowed one run on one hit in 2/3 of an inning.
