BOWLING GREEN, Kent. - Closer Steve Turnbull struck out Phil Wunderlich with the potential tying and winning runs on base, saving a slim 3-2 victory for the Lansing Lugnuts (28-19) over the Bowling Green Hot Rods (27-23) on Saturday night at Bowling Green Ballpark.

Carlos Perez delivered a first inning sacrifice fly and a fifth inning RBI single and Marcus Knecht belted his fifth home run of the season in the sixth, all off of Bowling Green starter Braulio Lara (Loss, 1-5), helping Lansing take a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth.

Turnbull quickly retired the first two Hot Rods before Cody Rogers tripled to left-center and Steve Tinoco followed with an RBI single to trim the Lugs' advantage to one run. Kevin Kiermaier pinch-ran at first base for Tinoco, taking second on a bloop single down the line by Robby Price.

Clean-up hitting Wunderlich stepped up next, but Turnbull whiffed the Hot Rods' team-leader in RBIs on a pitch in the dirt to end the game and record his 12th save in as many chances.

Misaul Diaz (Win, 1-3) picked up the victory with three innings of one-run ball in relief of John Anderson. The left-handed Lugnuts starter had scattered four hits and two walks over four scoreless innings.

Danny Barnes pitched a perfect eighth inning, bridging between Diaz and Turnbull.

Lansing starts left-hander Sean Nolin (1-0, 1.30) against Bowling Green right-hander George Jensen (3-2, 5.77) in the second game of the four-game set, slated for 8:05 p.m. ET on Saturday.

The Lugnuts return to Cooley Law School Stadium to take on the Peoria Chiefs on Tuesday, May 31st, for a Dollar Deal Day. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
