Hot Rods Erupt for Five Runs in Ninth to Beat South Bend

Bowling Green, Ky. - The Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) chased one of the best closers in the Midwest League from a tie game in the ninth, and plated five runs in the frame to beat the South Bend Silver Hawks (Arizona Diamondbacks) on Monday night, 9-4. It's a winning start to a six-game road trip, and gives the Hot Rods their seventh win in eight games.

As they have so often the past two weeks, the Hot Rods raced out in front with three runs in the second. Granden Goetzman led off with a single, and moved to third when Darryl George blooped a single to right field. After Pat Blair walked, Ariel Soriano grounded out to short to drive home Goetzman and advance George to second base and Blair to third. Juniel Querecuto capped the inning with a two-run single to center field.

South Bend would get on the board with a run in the third. Breland Almadova started the inning with a single, and proceeded to steal second base. One out later, a single by Jamie Westbrook drove him home.

The Silver Hawks rallied and tied the game in the fifth. Michael Perez led off with a single, and moved to second when Zach Esquerra walked. Perez was then off and running to try and steal third base. The throw went wide of the bag, and he advanced home. Andrew Velazquez would later reach on a fielding error that sent Esquerra home, and it tied the game at three.

The Hot Rods would waste no time in taking back the lead with a run in the sixth. Oscar Hernandez was hit by a pitch with two outs, and he would come around to score when George tripled to the right-field corner. Bowling Green led 4-3 after six innings.

The game would be tied up again in the eighth. Velazquez led off with single, and was then bunted to second base by Westbrook. A wild pitch moved him to third, and he scored on another fielding error.

The Silver Hawks brought in J.R. Bradley to pitch the ninth, and he hadn't allowed a single run all season entering the contest. That changed as five runs crossed, all with two outs. Soriano drew a one-out walk to start the rally, and he advanced to second on a groundout by Querecuto. After Wong reached on an infield single to drive him to third, Johnny Field was able to reach on a fielding error in shallow left field by Velazquez. It drove home Soriano to put the Hot Rods in front for good.

The scoring would continue as Armando Araiza singled home Wong, and Goetzman singled to plate Field. The scoring was capped when Hernandez tripled to the right-center field gap to plate both Araiza and Goetzman. It chased Bradley from the game, a 9-4 victory for the Hot Rods.

Stone Speer (2-0) was sensational once again out of the Bowling Green bullpen. He allowed just one unearned run in three and one-third innings with no walks and three strikeouts. Ian Kendall pitched a routine ninth to close out the victory.

Bradley (1-1) allowed five runs to be handed the loss. Prospect starter Braden Shipley allowed four runs in six innings for South Bend.

The Hot Rods have now won seven of their last eight games, and they'll try to continue their hot streak in game two of a three-game set on the road against South Bend. First pitch on Tuesday night is set for 6:05 p.m. CT, and fans can tune into the action beginning at 5:50 p.m. CT with the Pepsi Pre-Game Show on 1340 WBGN - The Ticket, the flagship home of the Hot Rods.
