Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill.- Even four errors on Monday didn't cost the Cougars their first loss at home in two weeks. The Cougars' (22-9) 13 hits made up for the defensive miscues as they downed the Timber Ratters (13-17) by a score of 8-4 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
Once again the Cougars were facing a deficit early in the ballgame, but this time did not come back until the third inning. Trailing 1-0, David Bote started things off in the bottom of the frame with a double and came around to score on Jake Hannemann's single. Two batters later, Ben Carhart put the Cougars ahead with a two-run double. After the 3-1 lead the Cougars never looked back.
The Midwest League's best team continued the offense the next inning thanks to a bases-loaded single by Hannemann and a run-scoring fielder's choice off the bat of Carlos Penalver. It was 5-1 Cougars after four frames.
The Timber Rattlers hung around scoring a run in the fifth, seventh and eighth. Yasiel Balaguert squeezed his first home run of the season in the seventh. Balaguert banged a solo blast off the left field foul pole to push the Cougars' lead 6-3. Chris McFarland led off the eighth with a triple and scored on Rafael Neda's fielder's choice, cutting the Cougars lead to two runs and keeping the game interesting. Shawon Dunston Jr. doubled the Cougars' advantage with a two-run triple for the final scoring play of the ninth.
Nathan Dorris (4-1) earned the win as the Cougars' second pitcher, tossing three innings of two-run baseball allowing three hits, one walk and three strikeouts. Anthony Banda (1-4) suffered the loss surrendering five earned runs through four innings. Zack Godley came into the ballgame in the eighth and notched his league-leading seventh save.
The series will continue on Tuesday with Daury Torrez (3-1, 3.45) on the mound for the Cougars against the Timber Rattlers' Preston Gainey (1-1, 1.86). First pitch at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark is 6:30 p.m. For tickets call 630-232-8811 or log onto kccougars.com.
