Dragons Shutout Loons, 2-0

Midland, Mich.-Four Dayton pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout as the Dragons defeated the Great Lakes Loons 2-0 on Monday night. The win improved the Dragons record to 18-12 and allowed them to hold onto first place in the Midwest League's Eastern Division.

The Dragons did not have a base runner until Brandon Dailey led off the sixth inning with a single to left. Great Lakes starter pitcher Scott Barlow retired 18 of the 19 batters he faced over six scoreless innings.

In the seventh, Phillip Ervin drilled a two-out triple to the fence in center field against new pitcher Greg Harris (2-3), and Daniel Mateo followed with a hard ground ball down the right field line for a double that brought in Ervin for the game's first run. It remained 1-0 until Dayton's Tanner Rahier connected on a lead-off home run in the ninth, his team-leading fourth homer of the year.

Dragons starting pitcher Nick Travieso continued an outstanding start to the season. He fired five shutout innings, allowing three hits with no walks and five strikeouts. In the fourth, Travieso pitched out of a runner-at-third, no out jam by getting back-to-back strikeouts and a groundout to keep the game scoreless.

Dan Langfield, who was added to the Dayton roster earlier in the day Monday, made his first appearance since 2012 after missing all of last season with a shoulder injury. Langfield was perfect in a two-inning stint. He struck out all three batters he faced in the sixth and got another strikeout in the seventh without allowing a base runner. The Reds third round draft pick in 2012 out of the University of Memphis, Langfield was credited with the win.

Evan Mitchell pitched a perfect eighth inning for the Dragons, striking out two. Scott Brattvet allowed a pair of singles in the ninth but struck out pinch hitter Webster Rivas on three pitches to end the game and notch his fifth save. It was the Dragons fourth shutout win of the season.

The Dragons continued to perform well against Great Lakes, the top run-scoring team in the league. In four meetings with the Loons this season, Dragons pitchers have allowed a total of four runs, winning all four games.

The Dragons finished with just five hits. Rahier's home run extended his hitting streak to six straight games.

The Dragons battle the Loons again on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Daniel Wright (1-1, 2.08) will start for Dayton. Great Lakes will counter with Jonathan Martinez (3-3, 4.50). The next home game is Thursday against Fort Wayne at 7:00 at Fifth Third Field.
