Three-Run Eighth Leads Kernels to Third-Straight Win

DAVENPORT, IOWA - The Kernels scored three runs in the eighth inning to defeat Quad Cities 5-2 on Monday night at Modern Woodmen Park. Zack Larson led the offense with three hits, two runs batted in, and one run scored.

With the game tied 2-2, the Kernels tallied three runs in the eighth inning to go ahead 5-2. Larson singled, Ivory Thomas walked, and Bryan Haar singled to load the bases with one out. Then, B.K. Santy drilled a two-run double over the head of the right fielder Brett Phillips to score Larson and Thomas while moving Haar to third base. Haar quickly scored on a RBI sacrifice fly by Engelb Vielma, making the score 5-2.

Ethan Mildren started for the Kernels and went six innings. He allowed two runs (one earned) on four this while striking out two and walking one.

Brandon Bixler (2-1) picked up the win in relief as he pitched two scoreless innings, allowing no hits while striking out one and walking three. Hudson Boyd collected a save for the second-straight game, pitching a 1-2-3 ninth inning with one strikeout.

The Kernels took a 2-0 lead in the third inning as they sent eight batters to the plate. Vielma led off the inning with a single into center field. With one out, Logan Wade doubled down the right field line to put two men on. Mitch Garver drew a two-out walk to load the bases for Larson. Larson worked the count full and then scored Vielma and Wade with a single into right-field, just past the outstretched glove of River Bandits second baseman Chan-Jong Moon. The Kernels loaded the bases for a second time in the inning with a walk by Ivory Thomas, but a groundout ended the inning with just the two runs coming across.

Quad Cities scored in the bottom of the fifth inning, making the score 2-1. Chase McDonald blasted a solo home run with two outs to center field to get the River Bandits on the board.

The run snapped a stretch of 28 consecutive scoreless innings for Kernels pitching.

Quad Cities added another run in the next inning, tying the game 2-2 in the sixth inning. Brett Phillips started the inning by reaching on an error by Wade at second base. A sacrifice bunt and a single moved Phillips to third base. He came home and tied the game when Conrad Gregor reached on a RBI fielder's choice.

Chris Lee (0-1) took the loss for the River Bandits, allowing three runs on three hits over three innings.

The Kernels have a very quick turnaround with Tuesday's game beginning at 11:00 a.m. Following the three-game series with Quad-Cities, the Kernels play a three-game series at Wisconsin.

LHP Josue Montanez (0-0, 5.06) is scheduled to start for the Kernels while RHP Jandel Gustave (1-2, 4.91) is slated to pitch for Quad Cities.

Cedar Rapids returns home on May 12 to face Peoria in a doubleheader at 5:05 p.m. The doubleheader features another Dollar Monday at the ballpark. Fans can get regular hot dogs, small popcorn, ice cream sandwiches, chips, and Cracker Jacks for $1 each on Monday home games.
