Trenton Devils News Release
TRENTON, NJ (January 7, 2004) - The Titans came up short tonight in their quest for a fifth straight victory. The Johnstown Chiefs, whom the Titans beat soundly last Tuesday, came away with a 4-2 victory tonight at Sovereign Bank Arena. The loss kept them two points behind the 6th lace Cincinnati Cyclones in the Northern Division standings. Johnstown netminder David Currie handled the Titans, saving 20 of 22 shots faced and was seemingly different a goaltender than the Titans saw last week during a 6-1 thrashing of the Chiefs.
Johnstown forward Jason Notermann would score the game's first goal, at 1:31 of the opening period, as Titans goaltender Alex Westlund was put to the test early. Notermann put the Chiefs' first shot over the shoulder of Westlund for his thirteenth goal of the season, assisted by Steve Hildenbrand and Dominic Forget.
At 8:42 of the first period, with the Titans on the penalty kill, Peter Fregoe made the game interesting as he tied it 1-1. Fregoe took a feed from Devin Rask and skated around forward-turned-defenseman, Shawn Mather and slipped it five-hole to Currie. Matt Zultek would notch the go-ahead goal with 8:23 remaining in the second period. A Chief's outlet pass deflected off of Jeff Smith and came to Scott Bertoli behind the net, who found Zultek in the slot for the one-timer.
Jason Notermann struck again, however, at the 14:01 mark of the second period to tie the game at two goals apiece. With the Titans unable to clear their zone, Notermann fired a shot that trickled through the five hole of Alex Westlund. The teams went to the locker rooms at the end of the period with the score still tied 2-2.
The Titans entered this game 0-2 when tied after two periods and tonight would prove no different. On the Titans blueline,Larry Courville sticked down Bill Cass' outlet pass, which landed on Mather's stick in the high slot. Mather quickly fired and beat Westlund through the five-hole for a 3-2 Chiefs lead During the final two minutes of play, the Titans pulled Westlund in favor of the extra attacker, but with 53 seconds remaining in the game, Mather added his second goal of the evening, flicking the puck into an empty net to seal the Titans' fsfate.
The Trenton Titans are a member of the ECHL - America's Premier "AA" Hockey League. The Titans continue their homestand with two more games this week against Northern Division opponents. The Titans will face the Dayton Bombers on Friday, January 9 and Saturday, January 10. Game times are 7:30pm and 7:00pm, respectively. The first 2000 fans at Sovereign Bank Arena for Friday night's game will receive Can Coolies courtesy of Yellow Book USA.
