Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Oakland Athletics, have announced that pitcher Ben Hornbeck has been promoted to the Stockton Ports (A-Advanced) while the Cougars receive pitcher Justin Murray from Stockton. The swap of pitchers keeps the Cougars' current roster at 25 players as the squad opens a six-game homestand this evening at 6 p.m. against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.

Hornbeck (32nd Rd, 2008) and Murray (29th Rd, 2008) were college teammates at Kansas State University and were each drafted by the A's last June. Hornbeck had been the ace of the Cougars' staff so far this season, posting a perfect 4-0 mark and a 1.24 ERA (2nd among MWL pitchers) in seven games (four starts). Hornbeck's 47 strikeouts was fourth-best among league pitchers, and the left hander leaves Kane County with a 5-0 record as a Cougar, after first joining the club on August 25 of last season.

The Cougars' latest K-State alum, Murray, comes to Kane County by way of Stockton, where the right hander was 1-4 with a 6.04 ERA in seven games (three starts). Murray made his A's professional debut last summer for the Arizona A's (Rookie League) and was promoted to Double-A Midland towards the end of the '08 season. While there, Murray made five appearances for the Rock Hounds, going 2-1 with a 5.52 ERA.

The Cougars currently lead the Midwest League's Western Division by 1.5 games over Peoria and Quad Cities. Kane County (23-15) commences the six-game homestand this evening at 6 p.m. and Cougars' left hander Anthony Capra (0-2, 3.09) gets the start.
