A \'Loon-y' ending â Kernels win fourth in a row, 3-2, on missed catch

The Cedar Rapids Kernels won their fourth game in a row, 3-2, over the Great Lakes Loons on Wednesday night at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium in one of the oddest endings this season.
With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 9th, bases loaded and one out, Dwayne Bailey hit a sharp grounder to first baseman Tony Delmonico, who fired to ball to catcher Matt Wallach to force out Jose Perez at home plate. But the ball hit Wallach's mitt and dropped to the ground, allowing Perez to score the winning run from third.
The play made a winner out of Kernels reliever Mike Kohn (3-0) who pitched one inning after Kernels starter Manuel Flores completed eight innings. Flores allowed two runs on six hits and struck out four in a no-decision effort. Great Lakes starter Justin Miller allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and struck out three over six innings and reliever Robert Boothe (0-1) was the tough luck loser.
The Kernels scored in the second inning as Beau Brooks doubled and went to third on a throwing error. Gabe Jacobo lifted a sac fly into right field to give the Kernels a 1-0. The Loons erased that lead in the top of the sixth on a two run single by Travis Vetters.
Adam Younger drove in Jacobo in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score. Younger went 2 for 3 and was the only Kernel with more than one hit in the game.
The Kernels and Loons play a noon game on Thursday at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Gates open at 11 am as it's a 100.7 The Fox Thirsty Thursday where 12 oz. draft beer is just $1.50 all game.
