West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

PEORIA, IL - Riding the arm of Luke Putkonen, the West Michigan Whitecaps stormed past the Peoria Chiefs, 6-2, on Wednesday night at O'Brien Field. The ‘Caps blasted two homeruns, solo shots by Bryan Pounds and Jordan Lennerton, as part of a thirteen hit attack that left the Chiefs reeling from the opening inning. The Whitecaps added great defensive work to their stellar pitching and hitting.

In his longest outing of the season Luke Putkonen was in total command for his third win. The ‘Caps right hander lasted 7.1 innings allowing 5 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks, and 5 strikeouts. He held the current Midwest League leading hitters in check all night. Putkonen got great defensive play too. Brandon Douglas made a terrific diving catch at second base, and for the second straight start, Putkonen induced two key double plays.

West Michigan began the game with three straight hits. Gustavo Nunez singled, and Brent Wyatt and Brandon Douglas followed with consecutive doubles for a 2-0 Whitecaps' lead.

The ‘Caps would add to a 2-1 advantage in the 5th when Bryan Pounds lined a homerun to left for his second round-tripper of the season. Billy Nowlin and Jordan Lennerton followed with consecutive doubles to add another run to put the ‘Caps ahead 4-1.

Leading 4-2 in the seventh, Jordan Lennerton drove a pitch over the left field wall for his 3rd home run of the year.

West Michigan would add an insurance run in the eighth for a 6-2 final score.

Jared Gayhart came on with one out in the eighth and pitched the final 5 outs for his second save.
