South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Burlington, IA - The Burlington Bees used a six run bottom of the eighth to turn a close game into a rout, as they defeated the South Bend Silver Hawks 11-3 on Wednesday night at Community Field in Burlington.
Burlington got out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against South Bend starter Wade Miley (LP, 1-3). Nick Van Stratten began the rally with an infield single, but was thrown out trying to go first to third on a single by David Wood. Wood ended up at second, and scored on an RBI single by Nick Francis. Francis, like Wood before him, went to second on the throw home, and scored on an RBI single by Sean McCauley for the 2-0 lead.
South Bend scored a run in the top of the third against Burlington starter Tim Melville (WP, 1-0), who was making his professional debut. Chris Davis walked and then went to third on a double from Isaias Asencio. One out later, Davis scored on an RBI groundout by Brendan Duffy to get on the board, trailing 2-1.
That would be the only run allowed by Melville in his professional debut, as he went 6.0 innings allowing only two hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Burlington extended the lead with two in the bottom of the third against Miley. Van Stratten doubled to start the inning and Fernando Garcia was hit by a pitch. One out later, Francis chopped a ground ball to short, that hopped past Reynaldo Navarro. It was ruled a two-run single, and Burlington led 4-1.
The Bees really broke it open in the late innings against reliever Houston Summers (ND), making his Silver Hawks debut. Summers was tagged for seven runs in 2.2 innings, including a six spot in the bottom of the eighth inning. McCauley had a solo home run in the sixth, while Van Stratten had the biggest hit in the eighth, a bases loaded triple to right-center. Van Stratten finished 4-for-4 with three RBI in the game.
The Silver Hawks got a run in the eighth and another in the ninth off of Carson Bryant (SV, 2). Duffy added his second RBI of the game on a groundout in the eighth, while Davis had a sacrifice fly in the ninth to round out the scoring.
The series continues with game two tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 PM Eastern Time. South Bend sends RHP Randy Rodriguez (0-0, 0.00 ERA) to the mound for his second start of the year, while Burlington counters with RHP Sam Runion (1-3, 7.78 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 12:10 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
