Dayton Dragons News Release

Davenport, Iowa-Carlos Mendez's two-run triple in the top of the first inning ignited a nine-run attack for the Dayton Dragons as they defeated the Quad Cities River Bandits 9-3 in the opener to a three-game series on Wednesday night. The Dragons (13-26) have won four of their last five games. Quad Cities (21-17) had won three of their last four.

The Dragons enjoyed one of their best starts of the season, scoring four times in the top of the first inning. Dave Sappelt walked to start the game. With one out, Byron Wiley reached on an error. One batter later, Mendez delivered a two-out triple to right-center field to bring in both Sappelt and Wiley and make it 2-0. Kyle Day followed with a single to right to score Mendez, and after a walk to Cody Puckett, Kevin Coddington singled to center to bring in Day and make it 4-0.

Dayton scored again in the second on Wiley's sacrifice fly to bring in Sappelt from third to make it 5-0. In the third, Cody Puckett connected on his sixth home run of the season, a solo shot to left, to make it 6-0.

Quad Cities got on the board in the third on a two-run home run by Paul Cruz to make it 6-2.

But Dayton answered that with three runs in the sixth inning. Puckett doubled and scored on Coddington's single, Miguel Rojas later drew a bases loaded walk to force in the second run of the inning, and Wiley added a sacrifice fly to make it 9-2.

Dragons starting pitcher Curtis Partch (2-3) earned the win. He tossed six good innings, allowing three hits and two runs with two walks and five strikeouts. Andrew Bowman allowed one run over two innings of relief, striking out four, and Aguido Gonzalez tossed a perfect ninth inning to close it out for Dayton.

The Dragons collected nine hits. Mendez, Day, Puckett, and Coddington each had two hits.

Dayton will play at Quad Cities again on Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. (EDT). Lance Janke (0-1, 1.74) will start for the Dragons. The next home game at Fifth Third Field is Tuesday, May 26th vs. the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.
