Bees Pound Silver Hawks In Series Opener

Burlington, IA (May 20, 2009) - The Burlington Bees used a six-run eighth inning to defeat South Bend 11-3 Wednesday night at Community Field. Tim Melville made his professional debut pitching six innings allowing one run for the win.

The Bees got things going by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, David Wood singled and was able to move up to second on the play. Nick Francis then singled to score Wood. Francis moved to second on a throw and then came around to score on a Sean McCauley base hit.

After South Bend scored one run in the top of the third, the Bees came back with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Nick Van Stratten led off with a double and then Fernando Garcia was hit by a pitch. With one out, Francis singled to score both Van Stratten and Garcia and the Bees led 4-0.

The Bees put another run on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning. McCauley hit his first homerun of the season to lead the inning off. South Bend put up one run in the top of the eighth inning before the Bees busted the game open in the bottom of the frame scoring six runs. In the inning, the Bees sent ten batters to the plate and recorded five hits. Van Stratten had a bases loaded three-run triple in the inning. The Silver Hawks did score one runs run in the ninth.

Tim Melville made the start for the Bees, which was his professional debut. He pitched great allowing just one run on two hits in six innings of work. He picked up the win. Carson Bryant allowed two runs, one of which was earned, in three innings and was awarded his second save of the year.

The Bees had 14 hits in the game. Van Stratten led the way going 4-4 with two runs and three RBI. Francis went 3-5 wth one run and three RBI. Garcia and Wood each had two hits.

The Bees continue the series against South Bend Thursday morning at Community Field. Sam Runion is the scheduled starter. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30.
