Greensboro Grasshoppers News Release
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Greensboro Grasshoppers staged a two-out rally in the bottom of the 10th inning and beat the Hickory Crawdads 8-7 Monday night in First Horizon Park.
With the win, the Hoppers gained a game on all three teams that were ahead of them in the Northern Division of the South Atlantic League.
The Hoppers (32-24) moved past West Virginia (31-24) into third place and pulled within one-half game of second-place Delmarva (32-23) and two games of first-place Lexington (34-22). The Power, Shorebirds and Legends all lost Monday.
The game see-sawed all night, with Hickory bolting to a 5-0 lead and the Hoppers scoring five times in the fourth inning to tie it. Hickory moved ahead 6-5 on Mike Carlin's home run in the eighth.
Greensboro rallied in the bottom of the ninth when James Guerrero drew a leadoff walk, was sacrificed to second by Gary Roche and scored on Kris Harvey's single to tie it 6-6.
In the top of the 10th, Hickory took a 7-6 lead against Hoppers reliever Blake Jones. Jason Delaney's single drove in Steve Lerud with the go-ahead run.
Crawdads pitcher Romulo Sanchez struck out the first two hitters in the 10th. Then pinch-hitter Jeff Van Houten singled, James Guerrero singled and Gary Roche singled to short left field. Van Houten scored on a play at the plate to tie the game 7-7, with Guerrero moving to third base.
Gaby Sanchez followed with a grounder to deep short. The throw by Brent Lillibridge was high, taking Carlin off the bag. Sanchez was safe on the error and Guerrero scored to end the game.
For Hickory, Carlin had two hits and three RBIs and Delaney had three hits and two RBIs. Roche went 4-for-5 for the Hoppers and Andy Jenkins had two hits and a pair of RBIs.
Jones (3-1) got the win and Romulo Sanchez (0-3) took the loss.
The five-game series continues with games in Hickory Tuesday and Wednesday night and concludes with a doubleheader Thursday at 6 p.m. in First Horizon.
