(Lexington, KY)--Matt Fornasiere lined a two-run single up the middle with two outs in the ninth inning Monday night, driving in the eventual winning run for the Captains in a 6-5 win over the Lexington Legends at Applebee's Park.

Fornasiere's late heroics helped end the Captains' five-game losing streak. It was only the second ninth-inning comeback for the Captains this season.

The Legends (34-22) maintained their 1 1/2 game lead in the SAL North, as Delmarva lost 4-1 at Lakewood.

The Captains were trailing 5-4 entering the ninth when Valdes lined a one-out single to right off Stricklen, who was 8-8 in save chances entering the game. Niuman Romero followed with a base hit to right, his third of the night. Stricklen then struck out Marshall Szabo for the second out.

The next hitter, Johnny Drennen, worked a full count before being hit in the right leg with a pitch to load the bases. Fornasiere, who was 0-4 in the game, stepped to the plate and lined the first pitch into center field, driving in Valdes and Romero for a 6-5 lead. It was Fornasiere's 19th RBI of the season.

Matt Davis retired the Legends in the ninth to notch his 14th save. He made a winner of Jorge Riera (1-1), who pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Riera entered the game with the bases loaded in the seventh, and allowed all three runs to score on a two-run single and a passed ball.

Drennen had a two-run double in the seventh when the Captains scored three runs to take a 4-2 lead.

Frank Herrmann started for the Captains and pitched a career-high 6 1/3 innings. He was charged with five runs, only three earned.

The Captains will face Houstn Astros righthander Roger Clemens in Tuesday's 7:05 p.m. game. Clemens, a 341-game winner in a 22-year major league career, will be making a minor league rehab start for the Legends. The Captains will counter with righthander Albert Vargas. The game can be heard on the Captains Radio Network (WELW AM 1330 & WKNR AM 850).
