Braves defeat GreenJackets in game one

Rome, GA - The Rome Braves defeated the Augusta GreenJackets Monday night by a score of 2-1 in game one of a five game series at State Mutual Stadium in front of a crowd of 2,789.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when Rome's Elvis Andrus singled to center field and advanced to second on a throwing error. He later moved to third on a pass ball and scored on an Isaiah Ka'aihue single to give Rome the 1-0 lead. The GreenJackets tied the game in the top of the sixth when Ben Copeland doubled down the left field line, moved to third on a groundout by Anthony Contreras and crossed the plate on a Eugenio Velez groundout. The score remained tied until the bottom of the ninth. After one out, Brandon Monk doubled to left-center and was replaced at second base by pinch runner Derrick Arnold. Quentin Davis then slapped a single to left-center to score Arnold from second to give Rome the 2-1 victory.

Braves starter Carlos Rivas pitched an impressive six innings allowing only one run on four hits. Braves reliever Devin Anderson (2-0) picked up the win while Bryan Millikan (2-1) was the loser for Augusta. Rome now leads Augusta by seven games in the Southern Division of the South Atlantic League.

The Braves and GreenJackets face off again tomorrow night at seven and Atlanta Braves catcher and former Rome Brave Brian McCann will make a Major League rehab appearance. Game time is 7pm.
