Columbus Catfish News Release

Columbus, GA - The Columbus Catfish (30-27) relied on a pitching gem from LHP David Pfeiffer to down the Savannah Sand Gnats (23-34) 7-2 Monday at Golden Park. Pfeiffer (1-0) lasted six shutout innings to get the win. He gave up just four hits and one walk while striking out five. It was only the second start this season for Pfeiffer, who began the year as a reliever.

Columbus took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a 3B Russ Mitchell sacrifice fly that scored CF Adam Godwin. They added a run in the second inning when 1B Jason Mooneyham scored on a ground out by C Juan Apodaca. Apodaca out-hustled the throw to first base on a would-be double play.

In the fifth inning the Catfish opened up a comfortable lead with five runs. DH David Sutherland, Apodaca, Godwin and RF Sergio Pedroza each had RBI singles and Apodaca scored on a throwing error by 3B Scott Schade. The 7-0 lead was more than enough for Pfeiffer. Columbus earned the victory despite allowing two runs in the ninth inning.

RHP Francisco Felix followed Pfeiffer with 2 2/3 innings. He gave up two runs, one of which was earned. RHP Dave Horlacher struck out the only batter he faced with the bases loaded and picked up his second save.

Godwin finished 3-for-5 with one double, one RBI and two runs. Sutherland and LF Drew Locke each added two hits. Apodaca drove in two runs and scored one.

The four-game series will continue with game two scheduled for Tuesday at 7:00pm. RHP Mario Alvarez (3-5, 4.96) will start opposite LHP Gene Yost (3-1, 2.87). In his last three starts Alvarez has a 2-1 record with a 2.78 ERA. For tickets or more information call (706) 571-8866 or visit ColumbusCatfish.com.
