Honkers Take Pitchers Duel in Waterloo

(Waterloo, Iowa) - The Rochester Honkers (6-2) relied on their pitching staff to get their fifth straight win tonight at Riverfront Stadium. The Honkers staff allowed just five hits to sneak past the Waterloo Bucks (2-6) 3-2. This is the second series in a row that Rochester has swept their opponent.

Zak Devermann (Illinois) started the game on the mound for the Honkers and worked three innings giving up just two hits and striking out one. Devermann has thrown 9 2/3 innings without giving up a run. Chad Tworek (Keiser) tossed five innings allowing two runs on three hits and struck out three to earn his second win of the year. Josh Ibarra (Concordia-Irvine) worked a perfect ninth inning to earn his second save in as many nights.

Despite the Honkers only putting up three runs, they continued to swing the bats well and finished with 12 hits. Benjamin Sems (Kansas), Derek Scott (Abilene Christian), Alex Baeza (Hawaii) and Thomas Greely (San Joaquin Delta College) all had two hits in the series finale.

Casey Dunlap (Point Loma Nazarene) got the Honkers on the board with a RBI single in the second. Michael Michalak (Illinois) and Baeza each had RBI singles in the fifth.

Waterloo fought back in the eighth with Deion Thompson (Western Illinois) hitting a 2-run single.

The Honkers play will travel to Mankato for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch on Wednesday with the MoonDogs. Cole Quintanilla (Texas) is scheduled to make his second start of the year, he has thrown 2 2/3 shutout innings this year and has whiffed three. The Honkers and the MoonDogs will meet again at Mayo Field Thursday for a 7:05 p.m. start time.
