Frogs Edge Kingfish in Weather-Lengthened Contest
June 5, 2018 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, Wisc. - After a pair of weather delays in the third inning, the host Green Bay Bullfrogs (3-4) did just enough to squeak past the visiting Kenosha Kingfish (3-3) by a final score of 4-2 from Joannes Stadium. The Bullfrogs scored two runs each in the second and fourth innings, while holding Kenosha scoreless in the final six frames of action. Both runs for the Kingfish came across the plate without tallying a hit.
Both teams return to action tomorrow evening for the two-game series finale here in Titletown. First pitch is set for a 6:35 p.m. start from the friendly confines of Joannes Stadium. A live video webcast of the contest can be streamed online through the official Northwoods League website. Fans can also listen to the live audio broadcast on WOCO Radio (107.1 FM, 1260 AM) or online at WOCO.Caster.FM.
Bullfrog third baseman Jake Finkbeiner (Freshman, Wayne State Univ.) had his best performance at the plate on the young season, finishing 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and one run scored. Left fielder Eddy Gonzalez (Junior, Incarnate Word) and second baseman Collin Luty (Junior, Northern Kentucky) each posted a 1-for-3 night at the dish while scoring a run. Luty also added one RBI to his statistical ledger, along with a double for his first extra-base hit of the summer.
The Kingfish scratched across the first run immediately in the opening frame as Connor Doyle scored from third base on a wild pitch to put the visitors up 1-0. The Bullfrog rally commenced in the second inning with shortstop Rudy Aguilar (Sophomore, St. Johns) ripping a RBI base-hit into centerfield scoring Cooper Morrison (Sophomore, UC Davis) to knot the score at 1-1. With the bases loaded, Luty was hit by a pitch to score Gonzalez and give the Frogs a 2-1 lead.
Before the weather stoppage of play in the third inning, Kenosha tied the contest again at 2-2 on another wild pitch allowing Doyle to score all the way from second base to even the game. After the weather delay, the Green Bay bats went back to work quickly. The Frogs loaded the bases in the fourth inning before catcher Blaise Maris (Sophomore, Florida Tech) laced the game-winning RBI single into left field to put the hosts in front 3-2. One batter later, first baseman Riley Mihalik (Junior, Rider Univ.) grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, allowing Luty to score from third base and stretch the Bullfrog advantage out to 4-2.
Both squads were held scoreless at the plate for the remainder of regulation. Green Bay right-handed reliever Travis Kuhn (R-freshman, San Diego) struck out the side in the ninth inning to record his second save in as many appearances and secure the Bullfrog triumph.
Green Bay righty relief pitcher Tyler Rosas (Junior, Dixie State) got the win, improving to 1-0. Kenosha southpaw Jon Ostroff took the loss, falling to 0-1. Rosas was rock solid out of the bullpen, allowing no runs on two Kingfish hits with four strikeouts. Rosas, righty Jason Applegate (Junior, Villanova) and Kuhn combined for six innings of scoreless relief with only two hits allowed.
