Madison Mallards News Release
Kalamazoo, Mich. - The Madison Mallards (5-3) kept pace atop the standings of the South Division with a decisive 7-1 victory Monday afternoon over the Growlers. The Mallards swept the two-game set in Kalamazoo and earned their third win in a row. Once again, clutch hitting, solid defense, and stellar mound work kept Madison in the win column. Starting pitcher Dalton Wiggins (Marietta) retired the last sixteen men he faced, and yielded only two hits and one unearned run in eight innings of work, to set the stage for the winning rally.
Turning Point
While Wiggins was dealing on the mound, the Mallards offense had failed to back him with runs until Jesse Forestell (Western Michigan), playing down the road from his home college park, blasted a ball over the right field wall to tie the game 1-1 in the top of the fifth.
The Madison offense busted open the pitching duel with a six-run explosion in the top of the eighth inning. The crushing blows were delivered by Jake Randa (NW Florida State) and Tyler Plantier (Richmond). Randa knocked a 3-run RBI double and Plantier followed with a two-run homer. Together, the two crucial knocks gave the Mallards a 6-1 lead. Forestell picked up his second RBI of the game later in the inning, sending a run across with a sacrifice fly.
