
Honkers Fall at Home to MoonDogs

(Rochester, MN) - The Mankato MoonDogs took the second game of a three-game series with the Rochester Honkers as they won 6-3 on Wednesday July 17 at Mayo Field.
Zack Zehner started the top of the second inning with a single to right field and scored on a two-run homerun from Josh Fuentes, as the MoonDogs took an early 2-0 lead. Mankato added a run in the top of the fourth inning as Zehner reached on a lead-off walk, advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches, and scored on RBI single from Fuentes.
The Honkers responded with a pair of runs in their half of the fourth inning as Kalei Hanawahine (Hawaii) and Carter Burgess (Sam Houston State) started the inning with back-to-back doubles. Hanawahine scored on a sacrifice fly from Tyler Baker (Wichita State,) while Burgess scored on a two-out single from Caleb Dugas (Copiah-Lincoln Community College) to cut the deficit to one run at 3-2.
Zehner blasted a homerun in the top of the sixth inning to increase the MoonDogs lead to two runs. Burgess answered with a homerun of his own, his fifth of the season, in the bottom of the inning to make the score 4-3 after six innings.
Mankato added insurance an insurance run in both the seventh and the ninth inning to build a three-run lead. Reid Roper (Illinois) started the bottom of the ninth inning with a bunt single over Mankato pitcher Jess Amedee and Matt Halloran (Minnesota) drew a walk to give the Honkers a pair of runners with no outs, but both runners were left in scoring position to end the game.
Julian Esquibel earned the win (2-4) for the MoonDogs. He allowed three runs on eight hits in seven innings. Tyler Eppler (Sam Houston State) took the loss (2-4) for the Honkers, as he allowed five runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings, while striking out eight. Seth Fuller (Black Hawk College) pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in relief for Rochester.
Carter Burgess (Sam Houston State) led the Honkers offense by going 2-for-4 with a double, a homerun, and two runs scored. Roper and Dugas each collected a pair of hits on the night.
The two teams will finish up a three-game series on Thursday July 18 at 7:05 p.m. at Franklin Rogers Park in Mankato, MN. Matt Kent (Texas A&M) is slated to make the start for Rochester (1-13, 19-30.) The Honkers will return home to Mayo Field on Friday July 19, at 7:05 p.m. to begin a three-game series with the Waterloo Bucks.
