State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE - Brian Sharp and Chris Lashmet each smashed their first professional home runs and Taylor Lewis drove in three runs while scoring two as the State College Spikes battled back from behind twice to down the Auburn Doubledays, 8-6, on Saturday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

The Spikes (5-11) set a new season high for runs in a single game in the win, and set a new franchise record by going a perfect 7-for-7 in stolen base attempts.

State College took the first lead of the game on Sharp's solo bomb to the left field Picnic Pavilion in the first inning. The Doubledays (8-8) then used three doubles to score a pair of runs in the second inning and added two more markers in the third to take a 4-1 advantage.

Lashmet struck back in the bottom of the third with a solo shot to center field to reduce the deficit to two, and State College added another run when Kirk Singer drove in Lewis with an RBI single in the fourth inning. In the fifth, Lewis knocked in his first two runs of the game with a triple to center field that gave the Spikes the lead, 5-4.

Auburn retook the lead in the seventh when Bryce Ortega produced a sacrifice fly and Russell Moldenhauer singled home the go-ahead run to make it 6-5.

In the bottom half of the seventh, though, Lewis and the Spikes responded with a big inning to grab their final lead. Carlos Mesa, who went 2-for-3 on the night, delivered a one-out double, with an Auburn error following to put Samuel Gonzalez on base and send Mesa to third. Lewis's ensuing RBI single plated Mesa to tie the game, and the Maine product then stole second to force an error that brough Gonzalez home. Lewis completed his night by colliding with Auburn catcher Adrian Nieto to score the Spikes' final run on a sacrifice fly by Walker Gourley.

Lewis and Singer joined Mesa as Spikes with multi-hit performances in the game. Lewis stole two bases to join five other teammates in setting the team record for thefts.

Mike Jefferson (1-1) pitched a scoreless 2 1/3 innings to finish the game and earn his first victory in the professional ranks for State College. The left-hander from Louisiana Tech yielded just one hit and notched a pair of strikeouts. Right-hander Nick Kingham gave up four runs on eight hits in four innings of work, adding four strikeouts as well.

Richie Mirowski (1-1) took the loss in relief for Auburn. Mirowski allowed three runs, one earned, on two hits and a walk in 2 1/3 innings on the hill. The right-hander also struck out three.

Hendry Jimenez and Matt Skole each produced three hits for the Doubledays, with Skole adding a pair of doubles.

Sunday, the Spikes finish off the two-game mini-series against the Doubledays as well as a five-game homestand with a 6:05 p.m. matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College will send left-hander Josh Poytress (0-1) to the mound for his first professional start. An 18th-round draft choice in 2011 out of Fresno State, Poytress took the loss in his pro debut on Thursday, pitching a single inning of relief against Mahoning Valley. Auburn will go with right-hander Wirkin Estevez (2-1) on the hill.
