Jamestown Jammers News Release
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. - Josh Hodges hurled five innings of one-hit ball to get the win, and the Jammers held off several Williamsport rally attempts to win, 3-1, Saturday night at Diethrick Park.
The Jammers (10-6) struck for single tallies in the second, third and fourth innings then overcame 10 walks and two bases-loaded jams to move into a first-place tie with Mahoning Valley.
Rony Peralta led the offense with two hits, a run and a RBI, while Marquise Cooper belted a solo home run.
For the first time in four games against Williamsport, the Jammers scored first with a run in the top of the second. Rand Smith reached on an error by shortstop Taylor Black. Then, Jobduan Morales and Peralta would have back-to-back singles with two outs to plate Jamestown's first run.
The Jammers would strike again in the bottom of the third as Cooper ripped his solo home run to left field to lead off the frame and extend the Jamestown lead to 2-0.
Aaron Altherr would answer in the top of the fourth inning with a solo shot of his own to continue his hot streak against the Jammers.
The purple and green would tack on another run in the fourth.
Peralta singled then stole second base to get into scoring position. He moved to third on a wild pitch then scored on a dribbler down the third-base line by Alfredo Lopez. The score would stay the same, but the Jammers would make things interesting as they walked seven batters in the final three innings to give Williamsport an opportunity to tie the game.
In the seventh, Chase Wier would work around a pair of one-out walks with a strikeout and ground out to keep the âCutters off the board.
Stephen Richards struggled with control in the eighth inning as well. After walking the bases loaded with one out, he was lifted for Alfredo Buret, who got a strike out and fly out to escape the jam.
It was Buret's turn to get into a tough spot in the ninth inning as he walked two batters and gave up a single, which was just Williamsport's second hit, to fill the bases again. The Jamestown closer induced a game-ending double play to earn his fourth save of the season.
Leonel Bastidas took the loss for the Crosscutters. He went five, gave up six hits, three runs and struck out six.
The Jammers and Crosscutters will wrap up the Jamestown portion of the four-game series Sunday at 1:05 p.m. before heading to Williamsport Monday for two more.
