(ASHEVILLE, N.C.) Harold Riggins' 10th-inning homer gave the Asheville Tourists a 9-8 win over the Lexington Legends Monday night. The Legends had come from behind to tie the game with two runs in the ninth inning.
The Tourists also had to come from behind, as the Legends jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Delino DeShields Jr. led off with a walk, stole second and moved to third on Ruben Sosa's infield out before Zach Johnson homered to right center field.
After Matt Duffy grounded out, Brandon Meredith singled and Mike Kvasnicka doubled, putting runners at second and third. Nolan Fontana followed with a home run over the right field wall, giving the Legends a 5-0 lead.
Asheville responded with a run in the bottom of the first on Will Swanner's solo homer, and the Tourists tied the game with four runs in the second. With one out, Jordan Ribera doubled and moved to third on an infield hit by Brian Humphries. After David Kandilas struck out, Legends starter David Rollins was relieved by Juri Perez. Trevor Story doubled to left field, scoring Ribera and sending Humphries to third. Sam Mende's single scored both Story and Humphries, bringing the Tourists to within a run at 5-4. Mende then stole second and came home on a single by Swanner.
The Tourists took a 6-5 lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Mende singled, stole second, went to third on a throwing error by catcher Luis Alvarez and scored on a sacrifice fly by Riggins.
Each team scored a run in the sixth to leave the score at 7-6 Asheville, and the Tourists added another in the eighth. Riggins doubled, went to third on a single by Taylor Featherston and scored as Jared Simon grounded into a double play.
But the Legends mounted a rally in the ninth. With one out, DeShields singled and stole second, his league-leading 77th steal of the year. Sosa struck out, but Johnson singled to left field, scoring DeShields. Duffy was hit by a pitch, moving Johnson to second. The Legends were down to their last strike when Meredith singled to left field, scoring Johnson with the tying run.
Nelson Gonzalez (4-2), who struck out the side in the top of the 10th, got the win. Murilo Gouvea (2-6), who entered the game in the ninth, took the loss.
Johnson's three runs batted in increased his league-leading total to 89.
The series continues Tuesday. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
