
Torres Hits Two-Out Game Winner in 9th

HICKORY, N.C. (July 30, 2012) -- With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Hickory's Kevin Torres singled to left field to score Chris Grayson from third, defeating the Kannapolis Intimidators, 4-3, on Monday night at L.P. Frans Stadium. Grayson led off the ninth with a double and moved to third on two of two ensuing ground outs before Torres' game-winner.
Crawdads reliever Dennis Taylor (2-0) worked a scoreless top of the ninth for the win, and Daniel Webb (0-7) suffered the loss for Kannapolis.
Intimidators starter Matt Lane worked 6 and 2/3 innings, ending his night by striking out a seventh batter to set a new career high. Webb entered the game with two on and two outs in the seventh and allowed a Luis Sardinas two-run single to give the Crawdads a 3-2 lead.
Sardinas and Alejandro Selen paced Hickory, going 3-for-4 at the plate and combining to drive in three runs. All four of the Crawdads runs crossed the plate with two outs.
Kannapolis converted a pair of leadoff walks into two runs in the third inning when Joey DeMichele dropped a two-out single into centerfield for an early 2-0 lead.
The Crawdads cut into the Intimidators lead to 2-1 in the home half of the third when Luis Sardinas doubled with one out and scored on a Selen two-out single.
The Intimidators loaded the bases with one out in the sixth inning against Crawdads starter Kevin Matthews, but Phil Klein induced an inning-ending double play to get out of the jam.
Kannapolis and Hickory play game two of this four-game series on Tuesday at the Intimidators RHP Chris Devenski (5-5, 4.61) faces Crawdads starter RHP Nick Martinez (5-5, 4.72).
