Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks faced off against their hated rival, the Wichita Thunder Friday night at Independence Events Center. The Mavs and Thunder added yet another spectacular chapter to their young, but quickly budding rivalry in a 4-3 shootout victory by the Thunder. The Mavs dropped their first contest of the season, but remain unbeaten in regulation through seven games on the 2011-12 CHL schedule.
Andrew Courtney got the scoring started for the Mavericks just 3:54 into the first period on a loose puck in the Wichita goal crease. Assists on the goal went to Vern Cooper and Sebastien Thinel. Wichita evened things up with six minutes to go in the period on a power play goal from Andrew Martens. Matt Robinson and Aaron Davis assisted on the goal. The period went on without much incident until Cole Ruwe was checked in the head by Matt Summers. Summers received a match penalty for the illegal hit. The period ended with the Thunder outshooting the Mavs 20-8 in the opening period. It was the second straight game the Mavericks have allowed 20 or more shots in a period.
Andrew Courtney found his way back on to the score sheet two and a half minutes into the second period, capitalizing on a Wichita turnover in the neutral zone. Courtney slid the puck past Ryan MacDonald to give the Mavs their second lead of the night. Thinel notched his second assist of the night on the goal. After allowing 20 shots in the first period, the Mavericks held the Thunder to just three shots in the middle frame, and brought the shot total to 23-22 in favor of the Thunder.
Wichita was granted a two-man advantage early on in the third period and capitalized right away with a goal from Aaron Davis. Assists went to Thomas Beauregard and Martens. 46 seconds later, the Thunder took the lead for the first time in the game on another power play goal, this time from Alex Bourret. The Mavericks responded exactly 10 minutes later when Sebastien Thinel collected his third point of the night on a power play goal. Vern Cooper collected his second assist of the night on the goal, and Andy Zulyniak was also credited with an assist on the Thinel tally.
Regulation and overtime ended without another goal and the game was decided in a shootout. Brad Hemingway scored the shootout winner in the third round of the shootout and Ryan MacDonald stopped three consecutive attempts by the Mavericks to secure the victory for Wichita.
With three points on a goal and two assists on the night, Sebastien Thinel retained the CHL points lead with four goals and nine assists through seven games this season.
The Mavericks now heads to Fort Worth, Texas to play the Texas Brahmas on Tuesday evening and return home next weekend to play the Tulsa Oilers on Friday and the Thunder again on Saturday.
