Calgary, AB - The Calgary Hitmen returned to the win column tonight with a 7-3 win over the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
A high-scoring yet physical game, tonight saw 112 penalty minutes distributed between the two clubs. Carson Wetsch (2g, 1a) had a standout performance earning first star, opening the scoring for Calgary on the power play in the first period for his seventh of the season. Only seven seconds later, Sawyer Mayes scored his first Western Hockey League goal making it 2-0 heading into the second.
The second period saw the most action with Calgary finding the back of the net three times with goals from Carter Yakemchuk, Dax Williams, and Oliver Tulk. Edmonton was able to crack the scoreboard at 6:53 in the second courtesy of Nathan Pilling.
Heading into the third trailing 5-1, Edmonton found the back of the net once again with a goal from Skyler Bruce on the power play. Calgary was able to regain their four goal lead and extend it to five with goals from Keets Fawcett and Carson Wetsch. Ty Nash would score once more for Edmonton, making the final result 7-3. Calgary cracked 50 shots on goal, outshooting Edmonton 54-40. Ethan Buenaventura made 37 saves.
Other standouts tonight included Keets Fawcett who now has goals in back-to-back games. With Yakemchuk's tally tonight, he leads all defencemen in the league with 10 goals.
Calgary now sits with a record of 10-10-2-0 returning to .500 on the season.
Next up for Calgary is a three-game road trip this week with a stop in Red Deer to face the Rebels on Tuesday, Nov. 28. It's then off to Lethbridge on Wednesday, Nov. 29 before finishing in Medicine Hat against the Tigers on Friday, Dec. 1. The team will then look forward to the annual Teddy Bear Toss powered by ENMAX on Sunday Dec. 3. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
