Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Calgary, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings ended their weekend with a 7-3 loss to the Calgary Hitmen at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Saturday night.

An action packed first period saw the two teams combine for 35 shots on goal, but it would be the home side the only ones to find the back of the net.

Carson Wetsch got Calgary on the board 10:24 in with a power play goal after he was able to shovel in a backhander off a rebound.

Just seven seconds later, Sawyer Mayes collected his first career WHL goal to extend the Calgary lead after he pounded home a one-timer from the right-circle of the Edmonton zone.

In the second period, Carter Yakemchuk and Dax Williams both scored less than four minutes in to drive the Calgary lead to four and spelling the end of the night for Oil Kings starting goaltender Kolby Hay who was under siege facing 27 shots. Coming into the game in relief was Oil Kings affiliate netminder Hudson Perry to make his WHL debut.

Nathan Pilling was able to get Edmonton on the board with his fifth of the season after tracking down a loose puck in front of the Calgary net and sweeping it underneath Hitmen goaltender Ethan Buenaventura at the 6:53 mark. Eastyn Mannix collected the lone assist on the goal for his first career WHL point.

Calgary responded just over two minutes later to regain their four-goal cushion after Oliver Tulk finished on a centering pass from Sean Tschigerl.

Less than a minute into the third period, Skyler Bruce tallied his third goal in as many games after depositing a perfectly placed backdoor pass from Ty Nash just as an Edmonton power play expired.

The Hitmen issued a quick response getting goals from Keets Fawcett and Wetsch to stretch to a 7-2 lead.

The Oil Kings didn't go quietly though as Nash notched his second goal in as many games just ahead of the midway mark of the period after getting sprung on a breakaway by Pilling, but that would be as close as the Oil Kings would get.

Hay and Perry combined to finish the night with 47 saves for the Oil Kings, while Buenaventura turned in 37 for the Hitmen. Edmonton went 0-for-2 on the power play, Calgary was 1-for-5.
