Quad City Steamwheelers News Release
DAVENPORT, Iowa â The Quad City Steamwheelers announced today that they have been re-assigned wide receiver /defensive back Jeff Hewitt by the arenafootball2 (af2) league office.
Hewitt, 5'10" 1950 lbs., returns to the Steamwheelers for a third season after testing the waters of the AFL the last couple of months. He was assigned to the Dallas Desperados for the 2004 season and was cut just before the season got started. Steamwheelers coach Rich Ingold wasted no time in bringing Hewitt back to the Quad Cities.
"Since I have been here in the Quad Cities, Jeff Hewitt is as good or better than any player we have had," said Ingold. "We are excited to get him in here."
Last season for the Steamwheelers, Hewitt was second on the team in receptions with 88 and receiving yards with 1268. He finished the regular season ranked 5th in the af2 in scoring with 210 points scoring 35 touchdowns on the season.
Hewitt emerged onto the af2 scene last year in the second game of the season against the Tennessee Valley Vipers. Following a switch to offensive specialist, he responded by catching ten passes for 209 yards and six touchdowns.
Hewitt was not only a key contributor on offense, but when he was needed he showcased his talents on defense as well. In Week 10 against the Cincinnati Swarm, Hewitt intercepted three passes and recorded five tackles. He was awarded defensive MVP and Ironman honors for his performance in Week 10.
Hewitt was a member of the Steamwheelers in 2002, one of only five players to appear in every game that season. In his af2 rookie season, Hewitt finished the year with 45 receptions for 575 yards and 15 touchdowns.
This now brings the Steamwheelers training camp roster to 32 players with three spots remaining open for camp, which opens on March 18. Players report on March 17.
