LAREDO, Texas â The Laredo Law have been assigned quarterback Josh Rogers and offensive specialist P.J. Winston by the arenafootball2 league office. Both players have previous af2 experience. The Laredo Law 2004 af2 season begins April 3rd, with the home opener set for April 23rd at the LEC. Call the Law ticket office at (956)-726-GAME (4263) or log onto www.laredolaw.com.
The 6'3", 220-pound, Rogers is the second QB assigned to the Law. In 2002 he played with the Florida Firecats and helped lead the team to the ArenaCup League Championship Game. In 2003 he played in nine games with the Louisville Fire. He completed 51.4 % of his passes for 1,752 yards and 27 touchdowns.
"I think it is a good opportunity," said Rogers. "I want a chance to go to the Canadian Football League and I know that Coach Maynard has a lot of good CFL connections."
Rogers is originally from Los Gatos, CA located in the Bay Area. He was a CSPN Roox Blue Chip All-American selection for the Western Region in 1996 as a senior at Los Gatos High School. After high school he played two years at Los Medanos Junior College located in San Francisco. Was an All- American selection while in junior college. He then played spot duty for South Carolina from 1999-2000 where he went to back-to-back Outback Bowls.
"I love his decision making," said Law head coach Scot Maynard. "Josh has great competitiveness and leadership and is experienced in the indoor game. Josh is a tough kid and a terrific leader."
Rogers completed a double major with a B.A. in Business and in Marketing and Management.
A 6'0", 200-pound receiver, Winston played his college football at New Mexico State from 1999-2002. His senior year had 39 receptions for 574 yards and three touchdowns.
"I saw P.J. play at New Mexico State," said Maynard. "I've had the chance to watch him for the last couple of years. He is the complete package. Right now he is going to compete for the offensive specialist position, but he is also a possible two way player."
Winston spent last season with the af2 Richmond Speed. He had 37 catches for 345 yards and three touchdowns.
"I am excited about getting a chance to play pro ball in my home state," said Winston. "It feels good to help a new team get going."
Winston is from Commerce, Texas. He was a two time All-District selection in basketball and baseball while at Commerce High School. On the gridiron helped Commerce go 15-1 in 1997 and reach the 3A state championship game. He pitched back-to-back no-hitters in a high school baseball post-season district tournament.
