2009 Steamwheelers Schedule Released

November 10, 2008 - arenafootball2 (af2) - Quad City Steamwheelers News Release

(Moline, Ill.) - The Quad City Steamwheelers are set to kick-off their tenth season in arenafootball2 on Sunday March 29th at 3:05 PM at the i-wireless Center against division foe Peoria. The opening game marks the first time in team history that the Steamwheelers played at home on a Sunday. All remaining home games will kickoff at 7:05 PM.

2009 will showcase great rivaled competition, new teams that have never played against the Steamwheelers, seven Saturday home games, and a friendly travel schedule for both team and fans.

"There are a lot of great things about this schedule that we feel very fortunate to have," explained Shawn Brown, team vice president and general manager. "We get to open and close the regular season at home which gives us a chance to start and end strong. The other nice thing about this schedule is our travel has been diminished a lot thanks to an increase in division play. To top it all off, our fans wanted us to return to Saturday home dates and we have been able to deliver that for them."

Joining the Steamwheelers in the American Conference Midwest division are Green Bay (Blizzard), Iowa (Barnstormers), Milwaukee (Iron), and Peoria (Pirates).

After their home opener, the Steamwheelers will travel to Tennessee Valley and take on the reigning af2 ArenaCup champions at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Alabama. They will return home for back-to-back division games against af2 newcomer, Milwaukee and then Green Bay respectively before clashing with the Barnstormers in Des Moines.

The Steamwheelers hit a bye week on May 2nd which is also a blessing in disguise because the following week they embark on their longest road game of the regular season at Manchester.

South Georgia invades the i-wireless Center on May 16th for the first time ever as Steamwheelers head coach, Troy Biladeau, rekindles a little history himself with the Wildcats. Biladeau was the defensive coordinator for the Wildcats in 2005. "It has been awhile since I was there but what is important to me is the type of challenge they bring to the field," stated Biladeau. "They made the playoffs the past two years and while we are in the recruiting phase, you know South Georgia will have a competitive football team to put on the field again this year and I'm looking forward to playing them."

The second half of the season is riddled with Midwest division battles in a race for the post season with Manchester coming here on June 27th. Unlike the past several years, the Steamwheelers will not have a bye week over the July Fourth holiday and will wrap up the regular season schedule with two home games against Green Bay and Iowa before hitting a bye-week leading into the 2009 playoffs.

"With the return of Saturday home games and more geographically close division games, we hope that more fans will renew or purchase their season tickets and support the team on the road," stated Brown.
