St. Lucie Mets News Release
LAKELAND, Fla. (May 19, 2014) - The St. Lucie Mets outlasted the Lakeland Flying Tigers in a thrilling series finale at Joker Marchant Stadium on Monday night.
Dilson Herrera drove in the go-ahead run in the 11th inning and Beck Wheeler retired the side in order in the bottom of half to help the Mets to a 5-4 victory.
The Mets took three out of four games against Lakeland and moved 0.5 games ahead of the Fort Myers Miracle for first place in the Florida State League South Division.
Herrera went 3 for 6 in the game. He now has nine multi hit games in his last 10 contests. His winning double came off of Tyler Clark with no outs. Maikis De La Cruz, who led off the frame with a single, scored easily to break the tie.
Wheeler struck out the side in the 10th and struck out two more in the 11th to earn the win. Three Mets pitchers - starter Steven Matz, Seth Lugo and Wheeler - combined for 19 strikeouts, a season high for the St. Lucie staff.
The Mets got on the board in the third inning when Cam Maron delivered a two-out, two-run single. Brandon Nimmo laced an RBI double in the fourth to make it 3-0.
That looked like plenty of offense for Matz, who cruised through the first five innings, striking out six and allowing just three hits. But the Flying Tigers belted four consecutive hits to start the sixth. Chad Wright smashed a two-run double down the left field line to make it 3-2. Jeff McVaney singled to left field and Gilbert Gomez misplayed the ball, allowing Wright to score to tie the game.
McVaney was on third with no outs, but Matz struck out two and induced a ground out to keep the game tied.
Herrera broke the tie in the eighth with a two-out single against Calvin Drummond that plated Eudy Pina. The lead would not last. Curt Powell provided an RBI single with two outs off of Lugo in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game 4-4.
Nimmo and T.J. Rivera had two-hit games for the Mets. Everyone in the St. Lucie lineup had a hit.
The Mets (25-19) return to Port St. Lucie on Tuesday to host the Clearwater Threshers. First pitch at Tradition Field is at 6:30 p.m.
