Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

LAKELAND, FL (May 20, 2014) - The Stone Crabs needed a complete effort one night after nearly giving one away and needing 12 innings to defeat the Threshers. The task seemed slightly tougher at Joker Marchant Stadium, home to the Tigers and the Florida State League's second best overall record. But Bruedlin Suero made sure the Tigers offense never got a glimpse of success, and the lefty turned in a masterful performance across seven innings to push his team to two games over .500 for the first time all year. A five run barrage in the fourth inning also helped Suero go longer than any other starter this year, and the Stone Crabs took the opener of the four game series with a resounding 8-0 shutout.

Yorfrank Lopez dealt two scoreless innings before his night started to unravel in the third. The Tigers starter, winless since his second start on April 13, allowed a one out single to Jonathan Quionez, who's been one of the Stone Crabs hottest hitters in recent memory. A walk to Andrew Toles brought up Tyler Goeddel, who opened the scoring with an RBI single into right center. Leonardo Reginatto then lined a sacrifice fly into right field, and Toles tagged from third to make it 2-0.

Ten pitches got Suero through the third with just one hit allowed, a harmless leadoff single by Tigers first baseman James Robbins. In the fourth, Kes Carter walked on four pitches before Jake DePew smacked a single. Hector Guevara's hard chopper to second was misplayed by Curt Powell for an error, and the bases were loaded for Quionez. Lopez quickly hit him with a 1-0 fastball, which scored Carter to make it 3-0. A deep fly ball to center by Toles allowed DePew to tag up for a 4-0 lead. Goeddel soon cracked a two run double to left, and Reginatto completed the five run outburst with an RBI single for a 7-0 lead.

Suero's only mistake came on an errant pickoff attempt following a one out single by Powell in the fifth. It would mark the only time the Tigers had a runner in scoring position, and Suero bounced back with a quick strikeout of Robbins and a flyout by Reaves to retire the side. The Stone Crabs southpaw tossed two more scoreless frames, and ended his night by getting a 5-4-3 inning-ending double play in the seventh. The final run of the night came on Quionez' first home run to lead off the sixth against Lopez, a solo shot over the wall in left on a hanging 2-2 pitch.
