Clearwater Threshers News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE -- The Clearwater Threshers erased an early 5-0 deficit on Monday night, but suffered a 7-6 loss in 12 innings in the series finale against the Charlotte Stone Crabs at Charlotte Sports Park.
Jeb Stefan had struck out four consecutive batters before a very close 3-2 offering to Patrick Leonard was ruled outside in the 12th inning.
With Leonard running on the pitch, Justin O'Conner singled to put men at the corners with two out. Stefan surrendered a walk to Kes Carter after an eight-pitch battle, and the count ran full on Jake DePew with the bases loaded.
Stefan's payoff was another near-miss, and Leonard scored on the walk to give Charlotte (22-21) the 7-6 victory.
The Threshers (9-32) had found themselves down by five after three innings on Monday.
After Clearwater was held hitless by Charlotte starter Reinaldo Lopez the first time through the order, the Threshers broke out with three consecutive singles to open the fourth inning.
With the bases loaded, Andrew Knapp sent a grounder to third that resulted in a force out of Pete Lavin at third base, but KC Serna scored to cut the deficit to four.
After Gabriel Lino singled to re-load the bases, Brian Pointer reached on an error by shortstop Leonardo Reginatto, which permitted Art Charles to score and make it 5-2.
Clearwater continued to cut into the Stone Crabs lead in the fifth. With runners at the corners, Lavin hit into a 4-6 fielder's choice to plate Roman Quinn.
Pointer pulled the Threshers to within one run in the sixth inning. Facing reliever Eli Echarry, he lifted a 1-0 pitch just over the wall in right for his third home run of the season.
The Threshers then rallied to tie it, facing reliever Marcus Jensen in the eighth. Charles rolled an infield single to third to lead off, and Knapp followed with a walk. After a wild pitch sent them both up 90 feet, Lino delivered a two-run single to knot the game up at six.
Stefan (2-3) suffered the loss, but allowed just one run on two hits in his 2.2 innings in relief.
Quinn finished 0-for-4 in his Threshers' debut. The Phillies' No. 10 prospect made his first appearance of the season, returning from a ruptured achilles tendon suffered during the off-season.
Clearwater will head to the east coast to take on the St. Lucie Mets on Tuesday, with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m.
