Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
DUNEDIN, Fla. (May 20, 2014) - The Fort Myers Miracle defeated the Dunedin Blue Jays, 7-2, in the series opener on Tuesday night at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.
The Miracle offense churned out four runs in the fourth inning. With the game tied 1-1, Travis Harrison doubled to lead-off against Dunedin starter Jesse Hernandez. Dalton Hicks coaxed a walk to follow. Niko Goodrum stepped in to hit, but Hernandez (3-2) wheeled around a tossed a checking throw to second. Harrison dove back safely, but the Hernandez's throw went into center field and the runners advanced to second and third.
On a 2-1 pitch, Goodrum laced a triple into the left center field gap to bring in Harrison and Hicks. Adam Brett Walker followed with a lined single through the left side to score Goodrum, 4-1. A balk by Hernandez moved Walker to second and a grounder to short by Stuart Turner pushed him to third. Jonathan Murphy then singled through the right side to bring in Walker and give the Miracle a 5-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Miracle starter Matt Tomshaw allowed the second of two solo home runs to the Blue Jays. Dalton Pompey hit a long drive over the left field fence to cut Fort Myers' lead to 5-2.
The Miracle answered in the top of the sixth, again capitalizing on an error by Hernandez. After retiring the first two hitters, Max Kepler hit a grounder to the first base. K.C. Hobson fielded and tossed to Hernandez, but the ball tipped off the top of the mitt and bounced into foul ground. Kepler moved up to second.
Two pitches later, the Miracle were granted a 7-2 lead. Turner hammered a 1-0 offering form Hernandez into the trees beyond the wall in left for his second home run of the season.
Tomshaw (3-1) earned his third win in four starts with a seven inning performance while allowing just two runs on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts. The only other run off Tomshaw was a solo homer by Derek Chung in the second. Madison Boer pitched a scoreless final two innings out of the Miracle bullpen.
Fort Myers scored in the first inning off Hernandez on a Hicks sacrifice fly. Hernandez went six innings and gave up seven runs, five earned, on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
