St. Lucie Mets News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (May 20, 2014) - The St. Lucie Mets ended their three-game home losing streak in dominant fashion, blasting the Clearwater Threshers 10-3 on Tuesday at Tradition Field.
Starter Michael Fulmer held the Threshers to one run and five hits in seven strong innings. He matched his season high of seven strikeouts.
The Mets knocked around Clearwater starter Miguel Gonzalez in the first and reliever Lee Ridenhour in the eighth.
Gonzalez, who signed with Philadelphia for three years and $12 million in August of 2013, was making his second rehab appearance with the Threshers. The Mets greeted him by loading the bases in the first. With two outs, Eudy Pina drilled a two-run single to center field. Cole Frenzel followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0.
Frenzel, who went 3 for 4, smacked a two-run double off of Gonzalez in the third to make it 5-0. Gonzalez was lifted after 2 1/3. He walked five and gave up five runs, two earned.
That was plenty of offense for Fulmer. He retired nine in a row to start the game. The only trouble he ran into was in the fifth when he walk Casey Serna with two outs and the bases loaded to force home a run. Fulmer recovered by striking out Pete Lavin.
The Mets punished Ridenhour for five insurance runs in the eighth. T.J. Rivera poked a two-run single to right and Gilbert Gomez launched a three-run homer to left to put the Mets up 10-1.
Angelo Mora connected on a two-run single with two outs in the ninth against Jake Kuebler to make it 10-3.
Frenzel was the only Met to record a multi hit game. Brandon Nimmo went 1 for 2 with two runs and he walked three times. Nimmo has 43 walks on the season, the most in the Florida State League.
The Mets (26-19) have won four out of five and remain 0.5 games ahead of the Fort Myers Miracle for first place in the FSL South Division.
The Mets and Threshers (9-33) play game 2 of their four game series at Tradition Field on Wednesday morning at 10:30 for Education Day.
