OMAHA, NE - Omaha Royals starter Gaby Hernandez was named today as the Pacific Coast League's Pitcher of the Week. The 24-year old right-hander earned the award for the abbreviated week of July 15-18, following the All-Star break.
Hernandez pitched the Royals to a 3-1 win last Thursday at Nashville, giving up one run on four hits in six-and-two-thirds innings, walking one and racking up eleven strikeouts. The eleven K's marked a season high for Hernandez and matched the season standard for an Omaha pitcher.
Hernandez has won back-to-back starts, allowing just two earned runs in 13 innings for a 1.38 ERA. He owns a 2.45 ERA in three starts this month. On the year, he is 7-5 with a 5.55 ERA in a team-leading 19 starts. His next scheduled outing is Tuesday night at Memphis.
Kansas City claimed Hernandez off waivers from Boston on March 3rd. He was claimed by the Red Sox off waivers from Seattle February 10th, before being designated for assignment by Boston on March 1st. This is his seventh professional season and the third straight year that he opened at the Triple-A level.
The Mariners acquired Hernandez in July 2008 from the Florida Marlins in exchange for lefty reliever Arthur Rhodes. Hernandez was traded to the Marlins by the New York Mets in December 2005, in exchange for catcher Paul Lo Duca. Hernandez was originally selected by the Mets in the 3rd round of the 2004 draft out of Belen Jesuit Prep High in Florida.
He was ranked by Baseball America as the Mariners' #21 prospect entering the 2009 season and was among the Marlins' top 10 prospects from 2006-2008, as well as being on the Mets' top 10 list entering 2005.
Hernandez is the first Omaha hurler to earn PCL Pitcher of the Week honors since Kyle Davies received the award for the week ending June 28, 2009. One Royals player has captured PCL Batter of the Week honors this year: Alex Gordon received that recognition for the week ending May 16th.
Colorado Springs left fielder Cole Garner was named today as the current PCL Batter of the Week. In four games at Portland he went 8-for-14 (.571) with three doubles, one triple, two home runs, five RBI and eight runs.
The Royals' next home game at Rosenblatt is Friday, July 23 at 7:05 p.m., when Omaha faces the New Orleans Zephyrs. The game will be followed by Werner Enterprises Friday Fireworks and a post-game concert by .38 Special, presented by Werner Enterprises and 96.1 The Brew.
