Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Sacramento River Cats thumped the Colorado Springs Sky Sox by the score of 16-3 on Monday evening at Security Service Field in front of 2,580 fans to take game one of the four-game series.
Sacramento pounded out 16 hits on the night en route to their big victory and used two big innings to put the game away as they scored seven runs in the fourth and six runs in the seventh.
In the fourth, the River Cats knocked out four hits, including two home runs, and took advantage of two walks and two costly errors by shortstop Chris Nelson to plate seven runs, three unearned, in the inning. Dallas McPherson hit a solo homer for the first run of the inning and Chris Carter launched a two-run bomb to finish the scoring and chase starter Alan Johnson.
Two more homers factored into the seventh as well as the River Cats batted around for the second time on the night. Michael Taylor launched a three-run homer to right and Carter capped the inning with his second homer of the night, a solo bomb to left. Carter finished the night 4-for-6 with two runs scored and three RBI.
Starter Kyle Middleton (6-5) was the beneficiary of the offensive explosion by the River Cats as he picked up the win after giving up just three runs over 5.2 innings. Johnson (8-5) took the loss for the Sox after surrendering eight runs, just four earned, over 3.2 innings of work.
Game two of the series is set for tomorrow night at 7:05 PM as the Sky Sox send out LH Greg Smith (1-2, 5.02) to face LH John Halama (4-1, 5.90).
Notes: Taylor finished the night 3-for-5 with five RBI. Former Rockies farmhand Corey Wimberly went 3-for-4 with a triple and four runs scored. River Cats reliever Jared Lansford, the son of former Sky Sox hitting coach Carney Lansford, pitched a perfect inning of relief. Eric Young Jr. began his ML rehab assignment and went 0-for-5 with a strikeout but made several good plays in the field
