PCL Names Player & Pitcher of the Week

Published on July 19, 2010 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Colorado Springs outfielder Cole Garner and Omaha starting pitcher Gaby Hernandez have been named the Pacific Coast League Player and Pitcher of the Week for July 12-18, the league announced Monday.

Garner, 25, led the circuit in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging, runs scored and extra-base hits during the All-Star Game-abbreviated week, collecting multi-hit games in all four contests. He batted .571 (8-for-14), scored eight runs, drew three walks, hit two home runs, three doubles and a triple and had an on-base plus slugging (OPS) of 2.024.

The Long Beach, Calif., native was activated from the disabled list just prior to the Sky Sox four-game set in Portland over the weekend, and the 6-foot, 205 right-handed hitter responded with his best offensive stretch of the 2010 season. Garner's two long balls snapped a 31-game homerless drought, while his .307 batting average following Sunday's game was his high-water mark of the year.

Hernandez, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound right-hander, pitched in one game during the week, earning a road victory over the Nashville Sounds on July 15. He went 6 2/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out 11 batters and walking just one. He carried a two-hit shutout into the seventh inning, exiting the game after surrendering a pair of two-out doubles. His 11 strikeouts marked his first double-digit strikeout performance since 2006, when he punched out 10 batters in a June 13 start for the Jupiter Hammerheads of the Florida State League.

Still just 24, Hernandez is trying to make his mark in the Kansas City system, now his fifth organization since being selected by the New York Mets in the third round of the 2004 draft out of Belen Jesuit High School in Miami, Fla. He was traded from the Mets to the Marlins in 2005 for Paul LoDuca, dealt from the Marlins to the Mariners in 2008 for Arthur Rhodes, and was released less than a month after being signed by Boston in February of this year. He has a career record of 53-50 with a 4.44 ERA in 838 minor league innings.
