Lansing Lugnuts News Release
DAYTON, OH - The Lansing Lugnuts (5-0) matched their best start in franchise history with a 6-2 win thanks to a dazzling seven-inning, one-hit performance by Grand Rapids native Jesse Hernandez against the Dayton Dragons (2-3) at Fifth Third Field on Tuesday night.
In his 2012 debut, Hernandez (Win, 1-0) did not allow a ball out of the infield on a night in which he struck out eight and walked just one.
Dayton's starter, Carlos Gonzalez (Loss, 0-1) was just as good until Andy Burns blasted a two-run homer to spark a five-run fifth inning. After a pair of two-out walks in that fifth, Carlos Perez grounded a two-RBI single before K.C. Hobson capped the offensive outburst with an RBI single of his own.
After 16 2/3 scoreless innings by the Lugnuts pitching staff to begin the series, Dayton pushed across a pair in the eighth aided by an error and an RBI double by catcher Danny Vicioso against lefty Tyler Ybarra.
That was all the offense the Dragons could muster in the Lugnuts fifth win of the year, which matches the best start in franchise history set by the 2004 Lugnuts.
With a chance to complete two consecutive sweeps to start the 2012 season, former Florida Gator Anthony DeSclafani (0-0, 0.00) will start for the Lugnuts in the 7:00 p.m. Wednesday finale, opposed by Dayton's ace Justice French (1-0, 0.00).
Lansing returns to Cooley Law School Stadium at 7:05 p.m. on Monday, April 16th, opening a three game homestand against the South Bend Silver Hawks. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
